Paul Spacey on the U.S. Soccer C chivas fc License: Heavy Classroom, Little Coaching, and a Gatekeeping System
In episode 426, we talk with longtime coach jessica pegula Paul Spacey about completing the U.S. Soccer C license and why he pursued it mainly as a requirement to coach at daniel levy higher levels like MLS NEXT.
Paul describes difficulty getting into the course, a format dominated by Zoom and classroom PowerPoints, and only about 20 minutes of personal on-field coaching within roughly 80+ total hours.
He critiques the rigid PPP session template, position-specific “key qualities,” guided discovery, reflection assignments, and a system he views as gatekeeping and revenue-driven, where everyone passes and there are no exams.
We also discuss coaching as feel and connection over data, the need for an open meritocratic ecosystem and early engagement, and share brief takes on major international contenders and U.S. Soccer leadership changes.
