The road between Old Faithful and the Lower Geyser Basin has so many geysers and hot springs, not to mention mud pots and fumaroles (WHAT???), that this part of the Grand Loop Road is probably the best location in Yellowstone to spend much of your time!
If you disagree, and there's another stretch of road in the park which tops this route, please let me know in the comments section below.
This is another in my Yellowstone podcast series which explains where to go and what to try and experience, in order to maximise your time in the area. There are three major geyser basins here, as well as two smaller ones. The bigger ones are the Upper Geyser Basin (home to Old Faithful), the Midway Geyser Basin (where Grand Prismatic Spring is), and the Lower Geyser Basin. On the way, you will also see Black Sand Basin as you leave the school Old Faithful area, followed by discord down Biscuit Basin.
There are some great frontcountry hikes in this area as well. These include the trail to Mystic Falls, the hike to Fairy Falls, as well as the walk to the Grand Prismatic Spring taylor heinicke nfl retirement Overlook, which is part of the Fairy Falls trail.
Firehole Lake Drive can be found more or less opposite the Lower Geyser Basin, and this is where Great Fountain Geyser is located. Great Fountain is the only geyser outside the Upper Geyser Basin which has its eruption times regularly predicted.
