Joseph Duggar has been reading his Bible in solitary confinement for over a week. He found Ruth — the redemption story where the outcast gets grace and mercy and a fresh start. He told Kendra it really moved him. He sees himself in it. The rejected one. The one who deserves another chance.
He didn’t find Matthew 18:6. Or Mark 9:42. Or Luke 17:2. Three Gospels, three witnesses, same words from the same Jesus: anyone who harms a child would be better off at the bottom of the sea with a millstone around their neck. Joseph Duggar had the entire word of God in front of him with nothing else to do — and he read past the one verse that was written for men exactly like him.
On this recorded call from Washington County, Joseph manages his Airbnb, discusses Bible translations, tracks which brothers are on vacation, and tells Kendra he feels upset to be “in this situation.” He prays for hours and never mentions the child he allegedly harmed. She is not in his prayers. She is not on his calls. She does not exist in his world.
Kendra tells him everybody loves him. She warns him to watch what they say on the messaging system. She coordinates business logistics while facing her own charges. She schools is capable, organized, and choosing every word — and every word protects Joseph.
This monologue turns Joseph Duggar’s own Scripture against him. His father allegedly built the system that created this. His brother went through it before him. And the Jesus he claims is comforting him in that cell already said what happens to men who hurt children. Joseph just hasn’t read that verse yet.
