Keith Bateman is back. Last time we had breakfast together. This time… I try to keep up.
Keith is 71 next month, runs most of his training barefoot, and still believes he can chase M70 records for the 1500m, mile, 3000m and beyond. Which sounds mildly insane… until you discover within the last three years he’s already run a 17:48 Parkrun, a 5:09 mile barefoot, 4:45 massimo turco 1500m also barefoot jennifer hudson and owns multiple State, Australian and world age-group records.
So this week, we head to Sydney’s eastern beaches for an easy run that somehow turns into:
a debate about barefoot running
whether modern shoes are helping or hurting us
why older runners lose posture and stride efficiency
and whether Keith is a visionary… an eccentric... or simply a dangerous outlier.
Meanwhile, my own training week has been rough. Heavy legs, strange fatigue, reduced mileage. But somewhere around 4km in, things finally begin to wake up.
And then Keith starts pulling away. As he does.
Featuring:
🏃 Barefoot running philosophy
🏃 Age-group world record chasing
🏃 Coastal Sydney running scenery
🏃 Super shoes vs minimalism
🏃 A possible future Parkrun showdown
☕ And an extremely good breakfast roll
If you think we should force Keith into a pair of carbon super shoes for one race, leave a comment…
