After hundreds of square miles were searched by land, water and air, the search for Travis Decker, the man accused of killing his three young daughters, has been handed over to federal authorities.
“We had reached a point where we need to rest our local resources," the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said in a Monday morning news release. "Our command staff continues to be engaged with the search command while we give our teams time off to rest and recuperate and be ready to rejoin the search for, and capture of, the suspect."
The sheriff's office said it "remains in command of the criminal investigation," but said it handed over command for the search operation at 6 p.m. Sunday. If more information about Decker’s location is revealed by the investigation, CCSO search teams will be notified.
On Friday, the medical examiner completed the autopsies on the Decker sisters. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that the Decker sisters' cause of death was determined to be suffocation, and the manner of death was determined to be homicide. Based on the investigation, the medical examiner said the girls most likely died on Friday.
