The OKC Thunder are once again the favorites to win the NBA championship while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is also primed to win back to back MVP awards. Now, OKC will have to battle Luka Doncic, LeBron James and the Lakers in the 2nd round of the playoffs. The Thunder swept their first round series against Phoenix, while the Lakers defeated Kevin Durant and the Rockets in 6 games. The Thunder vs. Lakers season series ended up with OKC winning all their matchups but there were a lot of questions and missing players during those games. LeBron and Luka missed a couple games, but so did Shai and Jalen Williams for the Thunder. Now this playoffs series is bound to be competitive as long as both rosters are healthy. Luka Doncic has been questionable but the same is the case for Jalen Williams. But who among these teams will battle against the winner of the San Antonio Spurs vs. Minnesota Timberwolves matchup?
The Thunder are the same deep roster with the best defense in the NBA who can defeat opponents by huge margins. The Lakers have also emerged as a late season contender with them climbing to the 3rd seed entering the postseason. OKC have Shai, Jdub, and Chet Holmgren as all-stars but they also have a ton of role players who can make a difference in a playoff series such as Lu Dort, Alex Caruso, Cason Wallace, Isaiah Hartenstein, Ajay Mitchell, and Isaiah Joe, all of whom won the title with the Thunder. The Lakers on the other hand have their three best players in Luka, LeBron, and Austin Reaves, but they also have effective role players such as Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, and Marcus Smart. The matchups in this series will be interesting. If Luka is available, how will he handle the defense of Lu Dort, who has proven that he can patrice brisebois guard Doncic effectively over the past few seasons? How will the Lakers stop the scoring and offensive creation of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander? Will LeBron be able to take over against OKC the way he did against Houston?
