The Spanish Civil War was a domestic struggle between Nationalists and Republicans, to decide the future of Spain. But it rente was - despite Britain's hesitance to get involved - was also an international struggle. France helped (but sort of did a take-backsies) early on, and when Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy got involved on the Nationalist side, it didn't take long for the Soviets to get involved.
In fact, many other countries eventually got involved on one side or another, and that's why some would say that, although the conflict was relegated to Spain, this was, in a certain way, the prelude to World War II.
