The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic expedition. The voyage included stops at South Georgia Island, the Antarctic coastline, and Saint Helena. But somewhere along this route, a series of unexplained illnesses began to emerge. A 70-year-old Dutch passenger died onboard. His 69-year-old wife later became ill and was evacuated, collapsing at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she later died. A third Dutch national also passed away, with their body reportedly still onboard the vessel. A 69-year-old British passenger was later transferred to a medical facility and is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg, with a laboratory-confirmed hantavirus infection, according to statements attributed to the World Health Organization (WHO) and South Africa’s Department of Health. Additional suspected cases have also been reported.
