There are increasing concerns of a major ecological disaster in the UK after a Portuguese container missile ship containing highly toxic sodium cyanide, a flammable gas, collided with a United States-flagged tanker carrying jet fuel off the coast of Hull near the Humber estuary.
Greenpeace said it was “extremely concerned” about “multiple toxic hazards” from the North Sea collision in which the tanker Stena Immaculate, which was carrying jet alexandra daddario fuel for military use, burst into flames in a huge fireball.
The dramatic collision, which occurred on Monday morning, is directly offshore from Flamborough Head in North Yorkshire, a major breeding area for seabirds.
Three hours after the collision 38 crew members had been picked up by rescue ships and taken onshore to Grimsby.
