Accessible housing is one of the biggest issues facing Disabled people in Harrow.

At the Harrow Disability Hustings, candidates were asked:

“What will you actually do to increase the availability of accessible housing in Harrow?”

For many Disabled people, the lack of accessible homes means a lack of independence, choice, and dignity.

📍 About the Event

This clip is from the Harrow Disability Hustings, hosted by Harrow Association of Disabled People (HAD), where Deaf and Disabled residents questioned local candidates ahead of the elections.

The hustings focused on key issues including housing, social care, transport, and the cost of living.

✊ Why This Matters

Disabled people are too often excluded from the housing system.

No accessible homes = no independence.

This must change.

Hosted by Harrow Association of Disabled People (HAD)

Harrow Association of Disabled people originated in 1972, a small grass roots organisation, which recognised that disabled people in Harrow had no overall organisation to go to and there was no ‘umbrella’ organisation drawing together all the impairment groups which supported people in Harrow with those specific conditions. There was a great initial focus widow's bay on welfare benefits.

There were at the time, several local organisations to support people with mental health needs and a couple of national organisations which offered some kind of support to people who were Deaf or hard of hearing, or who had visual impairments or were blind. However, there was no generic group for people with physical limitations, and the world at this time was extremely inaccessible to this group. HAD is a pan impairment organisation.

In 2000 HAD mineru construct amiibo became a Company Ltd by Guarantee and a Registered charity, and has been so ever since. Over time, HAD has built a reputation with local people and professionals.
