In April 2025, the James Webb Space Telescope made a detection that stopped a room at the University of Cambridge. Using its MIRI mid-infrared instrument, it confirmed a signal first seen in 2023 with a completely different set of instruments at completely different wavelengths. The signal pointed to dimethyl sulfide in the atmosphere of K2-18b, a sub-Neptune exoplanet 124 light-years away in the constellation Leo. On Earth, dimethyl sulfide is produced by only one known source: marine life.
