Many of you may recall the Royal Tournament at Earl’s Court in London. The world’s premier military tattoo and pageant that was held for over 100 years until 1999.You may also recall the highlight of the event, Royal Navy’s Command Field Gun Competition.
Two teams of 18 men hauling a 12 pound gun and limber (weighing something like 1200 pounds) along a 225 yard course that included obstacles such as a 5 foot high wall and a 28 foot chasm, all in under 3 minutes. It was not for the feint hearted - not only was it gruelling race but men were seriously injured too.
Now, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the field gun competition. My former father-in-law was in the Fleet Air Arm team greys anatomy twice in the 1960s.
But, where did the idea of this incredible feat of strength, stamina and teamwork come from?

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or southampton fc meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham and am a member of the Royal Historical Society.
I am also a member of the Victorian Military Society, the Anglo Zulu War Society and the Military Historical Society.
