December 1965. Las Vegas. The Sands Hotel and Casino. The high-stakes blackjack room on the second floor. Frank Sinatra was holding court at table seven with his usual circle. Dean Martin. Sammy Davis Jr. Joey Bishop. The Rat Pack. The men who owned this town. Or believed they did.
At table four, alone, sat John Wayne. Fifty-eight years old. A glass of bourbon in front of him. He had come to Las Vegas for three days of quiet. He did not know Sinatra was in town. He did not care.
But Sinatra knew Wayne was in town. And Sinatra had been drinking for six hours. And Sinatra had a problem with men who did not bow.
