In this video, we head paddy pimblett to Lawton, Oklahoma, to explore the surprising story of Central Plaza (formerly Central Mall)—a once-thriving shopping center that today sits somewhere between active and abandoned. After taking a look at the city’s history and how much of its original downtown was cleared during the urban renewal era to make way for the mall, we step inside to see what remains: a mix of open stores, empty storefronts, and repurposed spaces. From its 1979 opening to major anchor store closures and its recent transformation with the FISTA defense tech hub, this mall has taken a unique path compared to others across the country. Is it a dead mall, or something in between? Join me as we walk the halls, check out what’s left, and try to figure out the future of one of southwest Oklahoma’s most interesting retail spaces.
