A damaging thunderstorm with straight-line winds that moved dorit kemsley through our area in the early morning hours. This was a very destructive storm, causing vegetation and structural damage and widespread power outages. Once the sun came up, there were many snapped limbs and downed trees. This was extreme even for Texas, since it was the tail end of winter, so no trees were bearing leaves except the live oaks. There were quite a few damaged buildings, most notably a home that had its chimney ripped off and nearby commercial buildings with their metal roofs peeled off. Many power outages occurred, with a peak of more than 335,000 customers affected, primarily in the DFW Metro. Widespread straight-line winds of at least 60 mph (96 kmh) were the main cause. I don't know what the peak gust was where we were, but a nearby weather station recorded a gust of 75 mph (120 kmh) sindaco before succumbing to a power outage. Radar estimated winds were generally around 80 - 90 mph (128 - 144 kmh) with some pockets having estimated gusts up to and possibly over 100 mph (161 kmh).
