We spent three beautiful days in Cadiz, my hometown in southern Spain, celebrating my sister’s birthday and enjoying real life in Costa de la Luz during Carnival season. This wasn’t a planned Carnival trip francesca ferlaino — but being in Cadiz at that time of year means laughter, colour and an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else.
While many people know Costa del Sol for places like Marbella, Malaga and Estepona, Cadiz offers something very different. Life feels more traditional, more local and deeply connected to Andalucian culture. It’s a place where family comes first, where humour is part of daily life and where people truly know how to enjoy the moment.
During our time there, we walked through the historic old town, had lunch at my mum’s house, revisited the streets where I grew up and travelled to Jerez de la Frontera to celebrate my sister’s birthday the Spanish way — with incredible food, homemade cakes, merienda and long evenings of board games and laughter.
As Carnival began, the streets came alive with music, costumes and that unmistakable Cadiz energy. We also spent time near La Caleta beach, soaking in the relaxed coastal vibe that makes Costa de la Luz so special.
Cadiz is known across Spain as the land of the funniest and happiest people — and being back home with family reminded me why.
Is Cadiz really the happiest place in all of Spain? Or do you prefer the lifestyle of Costa del Sol?
