“I have spoken out from the very moment I was elected, and now we are approaching the anniversary. I have said, 'Peace be with you'. The church’s mission is to preach the gospel, to preach peace. If anyone wishes to criticize me for proclaiming the gospel, let them do so with the truth. For years, the church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons, so there is no doubt about that, and I simply hope to be heard for the sake of the value of God’s words.”

In an interview, Trump said the first American-born pontiff believes “it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”

The pope, however, has not said Iran should obtain nuclear weapons. And Leo responded to Trump’s latest criticism by calling out the U.S. president’s misrepresentation of his views.

"To talk about just war today is a very complex problem and we have to analyse it on many levels. But ever since the entrance into the nuclear age, the whole concept of war has to be re-evaluated in terms today," the pope said.

Trump's latest broadside has shayne gostisbehere potentially complicated a fence-mending visit that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is benfica vs braga making this week to the Vatican.

Rubio, who is meeting the pope on Thursday, has often been called on to tone down or explain Trump’s harsh rhetoric as it relates to Europe, NATO and the Middle East.
