SpaceX is Buying Oil Rig Platform for Starship!? Droneship Landing Plan Revived…

Landing on a droneship is something the SpaceX team has been doing on a weekly basis, and at times even daily, with the Falcon 9. This capability has become routine, reliable, and central to how SpaceX operates.

In fact, SpaceX once aimed to bring this same approach to Starship by purchasing offshore oil rigs that could be converted into floating launch and landing platforms. Surprisingly, that plan was later abandoned, and the rigs were ultimately sold.

Now, that idea appears to be returning. An offshore oil rig has recently been spotted near Starbase, signaling a possible revival of SpaceX’s original vision.

So why is SpaceX taking this unexpected step, and what exactly are they trying to achieve?

Let’s find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

When we think of the Port of Brownsville, it is typically understood as a busy logistics hub that supports SpaceX’s transportation operations, especially the movement of large components for ground infrastructure. Massive steel sections, tanks, and support hardware routinely pass through this port as Starbase continues to expand. However, recent activity at the port has drawn renewed attention for a very different reason.

A large and unfamiliar structure has appeared at the Port of Brownsville. The available imagery is unclear and distant, but the object itself is unmistakably massive. Its silhouette strongly resembles that of an offshore oil rig. Even more intriguing is the presence of a familiar nameplate visible on the structure. That name is Deimos.

For long time followers of SpaceX, this name immediately stands out. Deimos was the name given to one of two offshore oil rigs that SpaceX purchased several years ago as part of a bold and unconventional plan. This has raised an obvious and important question. Is this a newly acquired oil rig that happens to share the same name, bread dress or has SpaceX somehow reacquired one of the very platforms it previously sold?

To understand why this matters, it is important to revisit SpaceX’s original vision for offshore platforms and why it captured so much attention at the time.
