In a Tony Award's night marked by conversations of inclusion, Air'el Stachel of "The Band's Visit," proudly embraced his heritage.
"I grew up thinking that I would never have a career as a Middle Eastern actor and so I pretended for many years of my life that I wasn't Middle Eastern. And this jauan jennings show has been instrumental both for myself, to sort of embrace my own Middle Eastern identity, but also kids all over the world are telling us how transformative this representation is," said Stachel. "And so the theater sort of leads the charge in sort of changing milan vs atalanta that social conversation. And I feel very proud of representing a Middle Eastern show that has nothing to do with politics and all about love."
Deaf actress Lauren Ridloff of "Children of a Lesser God," also represented a community not often shown in the theater limelight, a member of the deaf community. Ridloff walked the carpet with a translator.
I feel that this time we, the 'Children of a Lesser God' cast, have brought a really fresh perspective to Broadway and I'm so glad that people are recognizing that," she signed.
