The 14th Annual Girlfriend Weekend-Author Extravaganza, held in Jefferson Texas brought as always some of the best authors of our time to town. Among this year's visitors were below deck mediterranean season 11 authors Jamie Ford, Melanie Benjamin, Gloria Loring and Cassandra King. Katherine Pancol, of Paris, France, was the event's first international author.
Benjamin is the author of "The Aviator's Wife," which was named the event's book of the year. Other winners were bonus book of the year "Deadly Little Secrets" by Kathryn Casey, children's book of the year "True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp" by Kathi Appelt and picture book of the year "My Grandma is an Author" by Melissa Conroy.
Dr. Fred Tarpley of Texas A&M Commerce received the brewers standings Doug Marlette Award for lifelong mark kelly achievement in promoting literacy. Charm Magazine won the regional KAT award for media promotion, and Shelf Awareness won the national award.
