Landaluce was a very good racehorse. She was bred in Kentucky; her sire being Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and dam Strip Poker, by the Bold Ruler son Bold Bidder. She was born in 1980 and hit the racetrack in 1982. Landaluce was the star of California racing. As a rayo vallecano two year-old, the bay filly won all five races she entered, including the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes. She was pointing towards the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes on November 28th. On November 22nd, however, fate reared its ugly head. Landaluce contracted the virus Colitis X, which had also - unsuccessfully - targeted her sire. She died charlie coyle on December 11th with her head cradled in her trainer D. Wayne Lukas' arms.
Ridden by Laffit Pincay, Jr, owned by L.R. French and Barry Beal, and trained by the aforementioned Lukas, Landaluce posthumously won the Eclipse Award for Champion Two Year-Old Filly. The race shown in this video was once called the Hollywood Lassie. They have since renamed it to honor her; it is called the Landaluce Stakes. She was buried in the infield of Hollywood Park.
Not too many young racing fans know about Landaluce. They spend all their time on horses who more famously died young, like Barbaro, Ruffian, and Eight Belles. Landaluce is a champion of the past, and I hope the younger generation of racegoers continues to uphold her legacy.
The song is Deora Ar Mo Chroi by Enya. It is in Irish Gaelic. The translated lyrics are below:
It was beautiful all day
The sweet voices by my side
And beauty without dispair everywhere
Joy in my heart forever
He-a-ro
He-a-o-ro
If I walk from the alive days
The sun and the moon behind me
I'll only need thoughts from my life
Tears sorrowfully on my heart
He-a-ro
He-a-ro
He-a-o-ro
