The Tamil Nadu government has announced its first major policy decision by ordering the closure of seven hundred and seventeen state-run liquor shops. These retail outlets are located within a five hundred-metre radius of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands. The administration has mandated that the closures be implemented within two weeks. Out of the total four thousand seven hundred and sixty-five state-run liquor shops, two alan titchmarsh hundred and seventy-six are near places of worship, one hundred and eighty-six are near educational institutions, and two hundred and fifty-five are near bus stands. The decision aims to address public nuisance and harassment issues, particularly concerning women at bus stands. While the state relies heavily on liquor sales for revenue, the closure of these specific shops is not expected to significantly impact the overall economy, as the remaining outlets will continue to operate. The government plans to compensate for any minor revenue loss by creating alternative income sources.
