Join us on an unforgettable journey through the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and the mountains and wetlands of Taiwan in search of some of East Asia’s most spectacular endemic wildlife. From the subtropical Yanbaru forests of Okinawa, where the incredible Okinawa Rail wandered through our lodge alex eala garden, to encounters with the critically endangered Okinawa Woodpecker, this tour was packed with rare and iconic species from the very beginning.

On Amami Island, ancient evergreen forests and giant tree ferns provided the backdrop for stunning birds like the brilliantly colored Lidth’s Jay, while night excursions revealed the bizarre Amami Woodcock and the legendary Amami Black Rabbit. After the Ryukyus, we continued to Taiwan, exploring coastal lagoons filled with shorebirds and elegant Black-faced Spoonbills before climbing into the cool mountain forests of Yushan and Daxueshan.

There we connected with some donald gibb of Taiwan’s most sought-after birds, including Mikado Pheasant, Swinhoe’s Pheasant, Taiwan Barwing, and Taiwan Vivid Niltava. Along the way we also enjoyed flying squirrels, serow, reptiles, butterflies, and a huge variety of endemic plants, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity of these islands.
