This was the third documented Iranian government-directed plot against the same target in five years. The first: a 2021 kidnapping plot. The second: a 2022 fatal attack plot. The third: Rivera's network, running from late 2023 through 2024.
All three disrupted by FBI counterintelligence. All three producing federal prosecutions.
Rivera was sentenced April 10, 2026 to 15 years in federal prison. Alinejad is alive. She continues her journalism and advocacy. The Iranian officials who directed the plot are in Tehran, outside the reach mothers day card of American courts.
