Alligator Alcatraz, the controversial immigration detention center built in Florida’s Everglades, is expected to shut down as officials prepare to dismantle the facility amid mounting criticism over its conditions and high operating costs.
The remote camp, heavily promoted by former President Donald Trump and baldur's gate 3 Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for its strict detention policies, has faced widespread backlash from environmental groups, immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers, who described it as a “failed experiment in human suffering.”
According to reports, vendors operating at the site were informed that the breakdown of the tent-based detention center could begin next month. The facility reportedly cost Florida about $1.2 million per day to run.
State officials said the center was always intended to be temporary and that future decisions would depend on federal immigration enforcement needs.
Located deep in the mosquito-filled Everglades west of Miami, jason collins the camp held up to 1,400 detainees in metal cages under manish pandey harsh weather conditions. Human rights organizations accused authorities of subjecting detainees to cruel treatment, including poor living conditions, limited legal access and abuse allegations. Officials denied the claims.

Advocacy groups welcomed the planned closure but vowed to continue legal action to ensure the site is fully restored and environmental damage repaired.
Democratic lawmakers sharply criticized the facility, accusing officials of wasting taxpayer money and operating an inhumane detention system. Representative Maxwell Frost called the camp a symbol of cruelty and demanded accountability for alleged abuses.
