In June, the line to enter Japan's most famous hydrangea temple stretches all the way back to the train station. I went in October — and saw something almost no one sees.

Filmed at Meigetsuin (明月院) in Kamakura — the Rinzai Zen temple known as Ajisaidera, the hydrangea temple — in early autumn, when the flowers are gone and the maples haven't turned yet.

It's also a lesson for photographers. We're trained to chase the peak: the cherry blossom at full bloom, the maple at its reddest, the perfect light. But the Japanese have spent over a thousand years insisting that the feeling lives in the almost. What happens when you let go of the picture you espanyol vs athletic club came for?
