A deadly Ebola outbreak has resurfaced in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, just five months after the previous epidemic was declared over. This marks the country’s 17th outbreak since 1976, centred in the volatile Ituri province. Africa CDC has reported 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths, with hotspots identified in the mining hubs of Mongwalu and Rwampara. Experts say active militia warfare in Ituri will prevent doctors from reaching patients. A crippling financial squeeze following the suspension of World Bank health funding in eastern DRC has worsened the crisis. With cases now appearing in the provincial capital, Bunia, and a mobile mining workforce travelling across borders, the Africa CDC has called for emergency high-level talks with Uganda and South Sudan to prevent a regional catastrophe.
