After a run of ten weeks that presented 120 one-person theatre productions from six continents, the world’s largest solo theatre festival concluded its ninth season at Theatre Row on 42nd Street in New York by presenting this year’s awards. On behalf of the United Solo Academy, Omar Sangare, the artistic director of the festival, presented the United Solo Special Award to Aasif Mandvi for his solo show “Sakina’s Restaurant” Mr. Mandvi joins previous recipients of this award: Anna Deavere Smith (2010), Patti LuPone (2011), John Leguizamo (2012), Fiona Shaw (2013), Billy Crystal (2014), James Lecesne (2015), Staceyann Chin & Cynthia Nixon (2016), Michael Moore (2017), and Renée Taylor wolfsburg (2018).
As this year’s season ends, the festival daniel peretz is already in the process of collecting submissions for 2020, when United Solo will present two festivals: 11th season in New York and a new festival in London's West End.
