On December 23rd, 2024, a Russian cargo ship called the Ursa Major exploded and sank in the Mediterranean — 60 miles off Spain. Russia called it a terrorist attack. Spain said almost nothing.

Two crew members died. And for over a year, the world didn't know what was really on board.

CNN's bombshell investigation just changed that. The Ursa Major was almost certainly carrying two Soviet-era nuclear submarine reactors — headed to North Korea.

Here's what the Spanish investigation found. Two massive objects on deck, each weighing 70 tons, covered in blue tarps. The captain called them "manhole covers." Investigators concluded they were VM-4SG nuclear submarine reactor casings — the same reactors that power Russia's Delta pwhl scores IV ballistic missile submarines. Transferring andy halliday them to Kim Jong Un would have been one of the most significant weapons technology transfers in decades.

The ship was sunk by a 50cm hole in the hull — consistent with a rare supercavitating torpedo. Only the US, select NATO allies, Russia, and Iran are believed to have them. Russia's Ivan Gren arrived and fired flares to block spy satellite infrared sensors. A Russian spy ship commanded by a rear admiral arrived days later and set off 4 more underwater explosions — apparently to destroy whatever remained.

The US Air Force sent a nuclear sniffer aircraft over the wreck site. Twice. The second time was more than a year after the sinking.

Someone sank that ship. The world is only now finding out why.
