Backstory: February 2012, Kendrick Lamar was supporting act for Big Sean for VCU's Homecoming concert. My friend was on Homecoming Court and, I couldn't attend because the Region V poetry slam was the same day, so I asked her if she could get my artwork to him. We won the regional poetry slam, and when I returned, she showed me a photo of him in the green room and said "Out of all the gifts people left, he only took a Cranberry juice and your artwork."
September 2012, Kendrick returned to Richmond, Va on the Music Matters concert at The National. I got the idea to print the same artwork on t-shirts and bring them to the concert. During his set, he stopped to talk to the crowd and I got the idea to raise my shirt up so he could see. He literally stopped the concert, asked "Did you make that?" I said chinese cars imported canada "Yes!" He asked "What's your name?" I said "Rob Gibsun!" The whole room cheered. He asked me to pass the shirt to the stage, held it up and said "This is what makes you motherfuckers family!"
I'll never forget the 'Hiii-Power' of that moment. Rushing to pick up the t-shirts from a shop 30 minutes in the opposite direction of The National was worth it. Parking on the outskirts of VCU, so I wouldn't get a parking ticket, was worth it. Passing out shirts to friends I knew were going to be backstage was worth it. Trusting that feeling of "I know my work will connect" was worth it. Being consistent with my art, showing love to the artist who's work moves my soul, brings blessings in ways only God can imagine. Editing these videos is how I say "Thank you!"
