That morning, two Iranian F-14s lifted off and turned south to hunt the A-10. To them it looked like an easy kill. They never saw the F-35 tracking them from 40,000 feet — invisible to Iranian radar, watching them the entire way on its AN/APG-81 sensor.
The F-35 closed silently to 60 kilometers, opened its internal bay, and launched two AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The Iranian pilots got their first warning when their radar warning receivers chirped. By then it was already too late. The first Tomcat broke hard with chaff and flares — the missile tracked through and hit it behind the cockpit. The second dove for the deck and tried to run — the second missile caught him before he reached a thousand feet.
Both Iranian fighters were gone in less than 15 seconds. Neither one ever saw the aircraft that killed them. The A-10 down on the water never even knew it happened.
