While @kathyflett1 and I were walking through Terwillegar Dog Park in Edmonton asking random people what they thought about Alberta independence, a man playing fetch with his dog walked up and gave us one of the most honest conversations of the day.

At first, when I asked him what he thought about Alberta independence, his answer was simple: no.

But then we started talking.

His biggest concern was whether Alberta would be too small to stand on its own. He brought up trade, tariffs, duties, port access, the United States, and whether Alberta would have enough strength as an independent country to negotiate with larger powers.

That orioles - marlins is a fair concern, and a lot of Albertans are asking the same thing.

He also said he still believes in a strong Canada, but admitted he does not know how we actually get there anymore. To me, that was the most important part triumphal arch of the conversation. Because this is where a lot of people are right now. They still want Canada to work, but they can see that the system is not working.

We talked about internal trade barriers, Alberta’s lack of political power inside Confederation, Quebec’s history of using separation pressure to get a better deal, and whether a strong “yes” vote could at least send Ottawa a message.

By the end, he said he was right in the middle. He was not ready to sign a petition for either side, but if Alberta independence got on the ballot, he would have to think seriously about it.

That is why these conversations matter.

Not everyone is already convinced. Not everyone is hostile either. Some people are undecided, thoughtful, and genuinely weighing the risks of independence against the risks of staying in Canada.

For me, Alberta is not too small. Alberta has energy, agriculture, resources, land, workers, industry, and a culture of building. The world needs what Alberta produces. The question zbigniew ziobro is whether we keep letting Ottawa negotiate against our interests, or whether Alberta finally becomes responsible for its own future.

This was a friendly, respectful conversation with someone who is not fully sold on Alberta independence, but is clearly thinking about it.

That gives me hope.
