In 1972, Cousteau's team discovered an unidentified white military vessel on the Antarctic seafloor — no insignia, no registry, one word painted on its hull in German: AINGANG. Entrance. The diver who first read it spent the next thirty years saying nothing about it publicly. Then he stopped being findable entirely.
In 1996, Cousteau descended to one thousand six hundred and forty meters beneath the surface of Lake Baikal — the oldest, deepest lake on Earth. He surfaced with shaking hands.
