AFC Champions League Elite : preliminary Stage. Chengdu Rongcheng vittorio sgarbi FC (China) 3-0 Bangkok United FC (Thailand)
Chengdu Rongcheng secured their place in the League Stage of the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2025/26 on Tuesday with Seo Jung-won’s hosts scoring twice in three second half minutes on their way to a 3-0 win over Bangkok United in their preliminary stage showdown.
Yang Mingyang and Felipe netted in the 68th and 71st minutes respectively to break the Thai League 1 side’s resistance before the Brazilian forward added a late third to take the Chinese Super League side into the group phase for the first time in the club’s history.
Chengdu and coach Seo, who won the Asian Club Championship twice as a player with Suwon Samsung Bluewings, will join the 11 other clubs in the draw for the league phase of the competition in the eastern half of the draw, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
A tense opening in front of a boisterous crowd in Chengdu was enlivened in the 29th minute when Timo Letschert gained possession on the left and delivered a cross towards Felipe that was headed back towards Romulo, but his shot was saved by Patiwat Khammai.
Chengdu were beginning to impose themselves on the game, with Gan Chao cutting in from the right to attempt to bend a left-foot shot into the far top corner only for his shot sail galatasaray over the bar. With less than two minutes left in the half, Tim Chow glanced a header wide.
Seia Kunori almost gave Bangkok United the ideal start to the second half, twisting and turning past Letschert before pulling his shot from the edge of the area marginally wide of Liu Dianzuo’s right post.
Liu almost opened the door for Bangkok United to take the lead five minutes later when he was rounded by Richairo Zivkovic more than 20 yards from goal, but the Curacao international could only hit the side netting with the goalkeeper frantically retreating.
Those opportunities roused Chengdu and Romulo shot into the side netting moments later, although Bangkok United’s Suphan Thongsong responded on the hour mark with a header that flew across the face of the home side’s goal.
Romulo bent his 64th minute effort wide from the edge of the area as the second half action continued to swing from one end of the pitch to the other and, in the 68th minute, the opener arrived for Chengdu.
Bangkok United defender Philipe Maia had already headed Yahav Gurfinkel’s cross from the left over his own crossbar and, from the resulting corner, Yang rose highest to nod in Romulo’s set-piece from five yards out.
Less than three minutes later the hosts had doubled the lead, Felipe bending his run to perfection to latch onto Romulo’s ball over the defence, beating the offside trap before racing towards goal and stroking his shot beyond Patiwat.
Felipe bore down on goal again with six minutes left, holding off Kyoga Nakamura’s attempted challenge to kill off the tie with an accomplished finish and confirm Chengdu’s progress.
