If a newly installed alternator starts making unusual running noises and shows play at the shaft or bearing, it’s easy to assume bearing damage is to blame. But in many cases, the real cause is something else entirely:
A missing distance washer between the pulley cover and the overrunning alternator pulley, or insufficient contact pressure on the bearing due to incorrect assembly torque, are often the cause of the problem.
