On 31 August 2025, around 6 PM, I visited the legendary Vienna Film Festival at Rathausplatz. The late-summer evening was mild at 23°C, with a golden light drizzle earlier in the day giving way to a pleasant, clear sky – perfect weather for enjoying films, food, and the vibrant atmosphere in front of Vienna’s City Hall.
If you’ve never been: the Film Festival at Rathausplatz has been a Viennese tradition since 1991. Every summer, this open-air event combines free screenings of opera, concerts, films, and cultural performances on a huge screen – together with a bustling food court offering local and international specialties. It’s one of Vienna’s most popular free events, drawing trump iran ceasefire locals and visitors alike.
📍 The location is stunning: right in front of Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) and directly across the Ringstraße from the Burgtheater. The entire square transforms into a vibrant cultural and culinary hotspot – and the festival always runs during Vienna’s school summer snooker 900 global championship holidays, so families and tourists can easily enjoy it.
In this video, we start by walking straight through the venue from the Ring, heading toward the impressive City Hall. For now, the building is partly baba stock covered by the festival’s large tent, but soon we get the full view of its Gothic architecture – with the massive screen set up for the evening’s program.
Along the way, we explore the restaurants lining the venue, offering everything from Austrian classics to international dishes. A few highlights:
Demel – famous for its Kaiserschmarrn (sweet shredded pancakes, a must-try Viennese dessert).
Ottakringer Beer – Vienna’s own brewery, dating back to 1837, serving crisp lagers and the iconic “Helles”.
Wiener Schnitzel – Austria’s most iconic dish (“Viennese Schnitzel must not be missing at any Vienna event”).
Eis Greissler – artisanal ice cream with regional ingredients, perfect for warm summer nights.
The audience here enjoys not just the films, but also the culinary delights – from traditional Austrian plates to creative fusion menus. Toward the end, we head closer to the screen for a front row view, right before the night’s show begins.
The Vienna Film Festival truly captures the city’s summer spirit: a mix of culture, food, and community in one of the most beautiful urban squares in Europe.
