"I do recognise that I was asking ordinary people to pay a little bit more"
Sky News asks the Chancellor how she can in stay in her job when she has broken her manifesto pledge not to increase national insurance. The Chancellor being questioned by Beth Rigby about breaking the manifesto pledge on National Insurance is Rachel Reeves, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK. The exchange occurred in November 2025 in the lead-up to or following her Autumn Budget statement, in which the Labour government planned to increase employers' National Insurance contributions. The core of the issue is: The Pledge: The Labour iceman manifesto had included a commitment not to raise income tax, VAT, or National Insurance (NI) rates for "working people". The Action: catherine, princess of wales In her budget, Rachel Reeves announced an increase in the rate of employer's National Insurance contributions and a lowering of the threshold at which employers start paying it. The Controversy: While the Labour government argued that the pledge referred to the employee element of NI and that employers are not "working people", critics, including some economists, argue that much of the cost will ultimately be passed on to employees in the form of reduced wages or lower wage rises, thereby breaking at least the "spirit" of the manifesto commitment. When asked how she could remain in her job after breaking the pledge, Rachel Reeves "refuses to get into semantics" and acknowledged she was asking "ordinary people to pay a little bit more".
