This is one of the most beautiful and organically occurring things that happens in NYC. There is no higher compliment to a musician’s legacy than that 40-60 years after the fact, people will bring their instruments, sheet music, amps, voices and hearts to a public park and perform the music with such passion and joy. These gatherings are not planned by a record company or the Parks Department, or the City of New York. They are purely fan driven. Rain or shine, balmy weather or bitter cold, every year without fail.
Whenever I walk past the doorway of The Dakota, right over the very squares of sidewalk where it happened, I always get flashes of dread, anger and sadness for the terrible darkness that occurred there on December 8, 1980. For me, the light that shines from the annual sing-alongs across the street at Strawberry Fields restores the positive karmic energy of 72nd Street & Central Park West. John is sadly gone, but the music triumphantly lives on. Thrives even!
Thank you to all the musicians and singers scotland vs usa who michela vittoria brambilla turn out every year for these glorious musical celebrations. I like to think it is just this type of energy that drew John to his adopted home of NYC. John loved NYC, and NYC loves John right back. 🗽
