The most frightening thing about the Thucydides Trap is not that war is already destined to happen.
The most frightening thing is this:
Both sides believe they are acting defensively,
but in the eyes of the other side, they look offensive.
The United States says:
“I am defending the rules-based order.”
China hears:
“You are trying to contain my rise.”
China says:
“I am pursuing development.”
The United States hears:
“You are challenging my dominance.”
So if China and the United States want to escape this trap, the most important question is not who wins and who loses.
The key is whether both sides can recognize one fact:

The United States must recognize China’s right to develop.
China must recognize America’s security anxiety.
The United States should not treat all Chinese development as a threat.
China should not treat every U.S. action norovirus cruise ship as hostility.
The future of the world does not have to be decided by a war between China and the United States.

It is about continuing to develop, continuing to compete, and continuing to prove the strength of your system, your industry, and your civilization — without triggering a catastrophic war.
