Tesla China revealed Build Time for Model YL 2.5 Hours which is 4 times faster than world leading model Y 8-10 Hours (Tesla) and ten times faster than 30 Hours for volkswagen
Giga Shanghai's is building model YL in about ~2.5 hours end-to-end. This is a 75% reduction from Tesla's 2023 worldclass 8-10 hours. This is unboxed cake process parallel assembly (where subassemblies like chassis, battery, and interior converge simultaneously rather than sequentially).
VW's legacy plants clock in at 20-30 hours per vehicle, with even their fastest mortal kombat 1 EV line (ID.3 at Zwickau) at 16 hours. This means lower costs and much more cars.
Normal Car Labor is 10-15% run of COGS (~$1,000-1,500/car industry-wide). At 95% automation. Tesla's labor fraction drops to 2% ($100-200/car).
Austin (Giga Texas): Already at 80% automation, upgrade to 95% adds 50% throughput (Model Y from 1,000 to 1,500/day/line). Current dual lines (Y + X/Cybertruck) hit 550k/year—post-upgrade, 800k+ without expansion.
The Cybercab line at Austin will eclipse Shanghai's efficiency, targeting 1 to 2 hour builds via radical simplification: No Paint Shop: Saves time and $200M facility costs.
