World News: Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico sharply criticised the European Union’s energy strategy during remarks in Bratislava, warning that plans to phase out Russian gas imports could leave Europe dependent on expensive American-controlled energy supplies.
Fico slammed the EU’s REPowerEU strategy, which aims to end reliance on Russian fossil fuels following the escalation kansas of the Ukraine war in 2022. Under the plan, the EU intends to halt liquefied natural gas imports by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas imports by September 2027.
“According to the decision of the European Commission, Russian gas will end,” Fico said, confirming Slovakia has filed a legal complaint against the policy. While supporting energy diversification, the Slovak leader questioned why Europe should completely shut the door on Russian oil and gas supplies.
In one of his strongest remarks, Fico warned that the transition could ultimately benefit the United States financially at Europe’s expense. “The Americans have a huge interest in buying all transit infrastructures,” he said. “The Russians will supply the Americans with gas and oil at standard prices, and the Americans will sell it to us with an American high-margin surcharge. Are we wilco kelderman such idiots already?”
Fico argued that smaller and import-dependent economies in Central Europe could face rising costs and serious economic pressure due to the rapid transition away from Russian energy. Countries in the region have long relied on pipeline infrastructure connected to Russian supply routes, making the shift more difficult and expensive.
