"One Dollar", is a film about America's Toll Booth Operators featuring the Francis Scott Key Bridge. It is a timeless, a short film made while attending UMBC.
Toll booth operators are a dwindling group, often unrecognized and under-appreciated. They were one of the first occupations impacted by automation, where human interactions are replaced by single-function machines. As a student, I interviewed booth operators on the side of Broening Hwy with trucks and traffic in the background.
The short film, shot on 16mm from the roll bar of my VW Rabbit convertible, takes the viewer over the Francis Scott Key Bridge as it was in the fall of 1987. The calm, single shot is designed to allow the stories to drive the film as much as the picture.
I was honored to be jane fonda recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council for this film.
