New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has faced iceman release date backlash over his new record-breaking budget and decision not to hire 5,000 more police officers.
Former New York City Police Department (NYPD) mohamed belloumi Chief John Chell slammed Mamdani's decision not to hire more officers as a "recipe for disaster".
The decision follows a campaign promise in which he vowed to end all of former Mayor Eric Adams' signed orders, including myanmar the hiring of thousands of officers.
Adams' initial plan for New York would have seen a gradual increase in police, with roughly 40,000 officers deployed on the streets.
Under Mamdani's plan, the Socialist Democrat plans to cap the number of officers at its current level of roughly 35,000.
"We need about 40,000 [officers], and we're roughly close to 34,000. So, cutting back 5,000, we're probably going to lose another close to 4,000 like last year," Chell said.
