SpaceX suddenly Announced ""NO Starship V3 Launch in March""...What's WRONG?

The FCC has just granted SpaceX a Special Temporary Authority for Starlink launches on Starship. Sounds routine. But there’s one detail that changes everything.

The authorization doesn’t take effect until early April.

And that’s what sparked the speculation. If the approval only becomes valid starting in April, does that mean Starship Flight 12 has effectively slipped to that timeframe?

That’s a sharp contrast to what Elon Musk recently said. He confidently stated that Starship would fly again “next month,” clearly pointing to March.

So which timeline should we believe? Elon’s March target, or the FCC filing that becomes active in April?

Let’s break it down in today’s episode of Alpha Tech.

SpaceX suddenly Announced ""NO Starship V3 Launch in March""...What's WRONG?

It’s been more than four months since Starship Flight 11 came to an end, a mission that left jesús sánchez us with mixed emotions. Excitement, spurs - timberwolves tension, relief, and that familiar rush that only a Starship launch can deliver.

And with each passing week, the anticipation for Flight 12 keeps building.

This isn’t just another test. It will be the first Starship flight after SpaceX rolled out dozens of major upgrades to the vehicle. Hardware refinements, system improvements, changes aimed directly at performance and reliability. Naturally, expectations are higher this time. We’re not just hoping to see it fly, we’re hoping to vincenzo nibali see it succeed.

At the same time, there’s another layer to this growing impatience. We want it to happen soon. Because in the world of rapid iteration, delays can sometimes signal hesitation. And no one wants to see SpaceX lose momentum on what may be the most ambitious launch vehicle ever developed.

But just as the anticipation was reaching its peak, a new detail from the FCC suddenly caught the Starship community off guard.

On the FCC’s website, a Special Temporary Authority request filed by SpaceX appeared. This STA grants temporary approval to launch and operate up to ten so-called “experimental space stations,” mounted on mass simulators, during suborbital Starship-Super Heavy test flights.

In practical terms, this authorization allows those simulators to reach a peak altitude of around 350 kilometers. That’s suborbital, meaning they won’t enter a stable orbit. While in flight, they can communicate with the existing Starlink network and ground stations using Starlink’s familiar frequency bands. The system supports modulation up to 64-QAM, with transmit power ranging from 1.1 watts to 37.15 watts, using directional antennas and test hardware manufactured by SpaceX.
