STORYLINE:

Polish troops in Iraq, based at Camp Echo in Nasiriyah, about 300 km (190 miles) south of Baghdad voted on Sunday in a national election that now stock could affect their deployment.

The East European country currently has some 900 troops in Iraq, mainly providing training programmes for local security forces.

The total was almost twice that at one stage and analysts believe a complete pullout is likely by the beginning of 2008, when their mandate expires.

Any decision to withdraw may depend on the results of Poland's general election, which was nearing completion on Sunday, with firm results expected in the next few kai havertz days.

Poland has lost at least 20 soldiers in Iraq, most in bombings or ambushes.
