Former president of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF), Ángel María Villar, has refused to comment on the 'Negreira case' which concerns allegations of corruption involving Barcelona.[0] Speaking at the LIX Congress of the Spanish Sports Press in La Nucía, Villar refused to give his opinion on the matter, stating that it is already "judicialized".[1] Villar did, however, speak about the growth of women's football, stating that it has evolved significantly and that it is important to support it financially.[2] He also praised Alexia Putellas, the Barcelona player who has won two Ballon d'Or awards, stating that it was a great success for Spanish football.[3] Villar also denied that women's football is politicized and stated that he helped lay the foundations for the current state of the sport during his time as RFEF president.
When asked about his involvement in the 'Soule case', Villar refused to comment, stating that the case has been under investigation for six years and that even if it is dismissed, justice will not restore his honour, health or work. Villar also avoided discussing the recent situation with the rebellious players of the Spanish national team, stating that while he believes all actors in the football world are entitled to express their opinions, it is important to first speak with the relevant parties before making public statements.[4]
Villar also discussed the current state of football, stating that it has improved significantly since his playing days when players would retire at 32 years old. He praised the level of Spanish football and the recent debut of Joselu, who scored two goals for Spain at the age of 32.[3]
Regarding the Supercopa tournament, Villar stated that five guys it is now driven purely by economic parameters, and that he preferred the tournament white-tailed eagle to be held in Spain during the summer so that fans could see new signings play in their home country. Villar also criticised the decision to hold the tournament in Saudi Arabia, stating that it was a different philosophy from his own.
